Interview in “Louisiana Libraries”

Julie is interviewed by Dayne Sherman in the latest issue of Louisiana Libraries, the journal of the Louisiana Library Association (Volume 73, Number 3, Winter 2011). Among the topics that Julie addresses are how she became a writer, how she got to Louisiana, how Louisiana and the South differ from other places she has lived, what her writing and revision processes are like, and what writers have meant the most to her. Interviewer Dayne Sherman is an Associate Professor and Reference Librarian at Southeastern Louisiana University and the author of the novel Welcome to the Fallen Paradise (MacAdam Cage, 2004).

Poetry Month Program at LA State Library

Louisiana’s Lieutenant Governor Jay Dardenne has announced an event to celebrate National Poetry Month: Just Listen to Yourself–The Louisiana Poet Laureate Presents Louisiana Poets. The lunch hour poetry reading in downtown Baton Rouge will take place from 12 to 1:30 PM on Wednesday, April 13, at the State Library on the grounds of the State Capitol Building. Julie Kane will be joining Louisiana Poet Laureate Darrell Bourque and other poets including Caroline Ancelet, Jack Bedell, Marilyn Burel, Sidney Creaghan, Charles deGravelles, Elizabeth Foos, Bonny McDonald, Alison Pelegrin, Brad Richard, and Chancelier Skidmore. The program is free and open to the public, and attendees are welcome to bring their lunch and to come and go as necessary during the reading. For more information, phone 225-342-9713.

Workshop for Middle School Students

On Friday, April 8, Julie will be leading poetry writing workshops for sixty 8th-grade students at the NSU Middle Lab School in Natchitoches, Louisiana. The students will be developing poems based upon their research and field trips to the Cane River region of Natchitoches Parish.

Kane and Sexton Featured Poets for Women’s History Month

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall, MN, will be holding a lunch hour poetry reading featuring the work of Julie Kane and Anne Sexton. The reading will take place on Wednesday, March 23, from 12:30 to 1:30 in CH 217. Faculty, staff, and students will read selected poems by Kane and Sexton. Poems by Louisiana Poets on the Radio

The current Louisiana Poet Laureate, Darrell Bourque, has launched a wonderful weekly series on Public Radio Station KRVS-FM in Lafayette, Louisiana–streamed live over the Internet on KRVS.org. Each Thursday at 3:20 PM or a few minutes later, you can hear Darrell read a poem by a Louisiana poet. He read my “Egrets” last Thursday, but coming up is wonderful work by Yusef Komunyakaa, David Kirby, and others. Here is the schedule through March 2011:
